Why should you install a fly screen?

Flyscreens are used to help stop insects getting into your premises.

You must have your windows and doors fitted with a flyscreen:

• If they open directly into food preparation areas
• If they are opened for ventilation during food preparation

Screens must be designed to be easily removable for cleaning in order to prevent risk of infection or contamination. This can occur as dirt built up on the insect proof screen may create the possibility of food contamination. The UK’s Food Safety (General Food Hygiene) Regulation (EC) 852/2004 specifically demands the installation of flyscreens.

“Windows and other openings are to be constructed to prevent the accumulation of dirt. Those which can be opened to the outside environment are, where necessary, to be fitted with insect-proof screens which can be easily removed for cleaning. Where open windows would result in contamination, windows are to remain closed and fixed during production.”
