Your Guide To A Pest Free Home

Pest problems can arise at any time of year, often when least expected. Whether it’s foxes rummaging through garden bins, cockroaches thriving in damp corners or rats seeking shelter and food, infestations can quickly become a serious concern.

At Shield Pest Control, prevention is always the first and best line of defence. By taking proactive steps, homeowners can greatly reduce the likelihood of unwelcome intruders and protect their property and peace of mind. Our Managing Director, Daniel Steward, recently shared his expert advice with The Telegraph on how to keep those pesky pests out of your home for good. Read on to discover some of his top tips…

How To Deter Foxes From Your Property

Foxes are a common nuisance in many residential areas and can cause considerable mess and damage when scavenging for food. One of the most effective ways to deter them is by eliminating food sources from your garden. Household waste should be stored in bins with tightly fitting or lockable lids, making access more difficult.

Once foxes discover there is no food to be found, they are likely to move on in search of easier opportunities. It is also important to block off any sheltered spaces such as beneath sheds or decking where foxes may attempt to create dens. Additionally, installing motion-activated sprinklers or garden lights can be an excellent deterrent; the sudden movement or light startles foxes and creates an environment they learn to avoid.

Preventing Cockroach Infestations

When it comes to cockroach prevention, cleanliness is key. These pests are drawn to areas where food and moisture are readily available. Regular vacuuming, prompt disposal of household waste and general hygiene can significantly reduce the chances of an infestation.

Homeowners should also address any excess moisture in the property by repairing leaks and using dehumidifiers where necessary. Cockroaches are particularly persistent, so it’s also advisable to store all food in airtight containers and avoid leaving food exposed for extended periods.

Keeping Rats Out Of Your Home & Garden

Rats present a different set of challenges and often appear when they find suitable sources of food and water, either indoors or in outdoor spaces. To keep them away from your garden, it’s essential to dispose of waste properly and remove any food scraps that might be left outside. If you have a garden pond or other standing water, installing mesh or protective barriers can help limit access.

Indoors, prevention begins with sealing off all potential entry points. Rats are capable of squeezing through very small gaps so it’s important to inspect and secure any cracks, holes and gaps around pipework or foundations.

While many minor pest issues can be resolved with preventative action, more serious infestations often require professional support.
