Shield Pest Control Volunteers for Friends of Blythe Hill Fields to Establish Coronation Orchard

On the 31st of January 2025, members of the Shield Pest Control team volunteered alongside Councillor Ellie Reeves and local schools as part of Friends of Blythe Hill Fields, in collaboration with The Orchard Project, to plant fruit trees across Blythe Hill Fields. This initiative marks the creation of the Coronation Orchard, aimed at encouraging the local community to explore the connection between nature and food.

Volunteers from Friends of Blythe Hill Fields receive training and support from The Orchard Project, and the initiative has been funded by the King’s Coronation Fund. Our team, including Finance Manager Nick Fowle, was proud to assist in planting the fruit trees, digging holes, positioning the trees and securing protective wire cages to support their growth. Over time, this orchard will serve as a vital space, providing both a habitat for wildlife and fresh, free fruit for the local community.

Orchards play a crucial role in fostering biodiversity by creating natural habitats for various species, including beneficial insects. Pests, such as aphids, fruit flies and moths, are naturally drawn to these environments, and by establishing orchards, we help divert these pests away from residential areas, reducing the likelihood of them seeking food and shelter in nearby homes.

At Shield Pest Control, we commend Friends of Blythe Hill Fields for their dedication to preserving green spaces and we are proud to have contributed to an initiative that not only enhances the environment but also strengthens community ties.

We look forward to continuing our support for the Blythe Hill Fields community both now and in the future.
